Assignment #2 Due October 22
Put a line above Assignment #1; assignment #2 will go above assignment #1.
Read chapter two.
Choose one of the following: suspense or foreshadowing.
With your small group, find four examples of suspense OR foreshadowing in chapter two.
Each member of your group must write on his or her WIKI page the exact wording from the book - that means type the sentences exactly as they are written.
Then, in a well-written paragraph, explain why these sentences clearly show either suspense or foreshadowing.
Read chapter three for Monday, October 25.
10/21/10
Suspense
(Page 31) "The Indian Poem"
The first example of suspense is when Vera Claythorne finds and reads the poem for the first time. Considering that the title of the peom is "And Then There Were None" we can infer that in the end of the book, something dreadful will happen to the guests "and there will be none". This is suspensful because it wants you to keep reading so you can find out what happens with all the guests.
(Page 29) "Rogers"
A second suspenseful moment occurred when Vera thought: "She looks frightened by her own shadow. Yes that was it---- frightened! She looked like a woman who walked in a mortal fear..." when she was taken up to up to her guest room by Mrs. Rogers. Vera had noticed her pale, bloodless skin, ghostly figure, and queer light eyes that constantly moved from place to place. This offers a suspenseful feeling because it makes you shiver and feel like Mrs. Rogers is guilty of something and is the cause of all the queer feelings about the house.
(Page 32) "Drowning Experience"
Vera thought this right after she had read the poem: " The sea... So peaceful to-day--sometimes so cruel... The sea that dragged you down to its depths. Drowned...Found drowned... Drowned at sea... Drowned--drowned--drowned... No, she wouldn't remember... She would not think of it! All that was over...." I think what Vera means by this is that she had passed experiences with the sea or a body of water and a "friend" named Hugo. This is suspenseful because it leads you to thinking that something very bad has happened to Vera back in the passed and that she may be haunted by thoughts from that experience and it leaves you wanting to know what has happened.
(Page 30) "The Owens"
As it states in Chapter two, Vera is Mrs. Owens assistant. Although she thought to herself: "I wish i'd seen the Owens... I wish I knew what they were like." This tells me that Vera has maybe only talked to Mrs. Owens once or twice and nothing more than that. If you think about it, a person who is starting a job as someone's assistant, they should at least have met that person before. This is suspenseful because it makes you want to learn more about the Owens and what they want with all of these people they have invited to Indian Island.
Great group work. You picked good examples of foreshadowing. Each suggests that something ominous is going to happen. Mrs. M
how does a mystery novel differ from a narrative?
how might the title be a clue to the story?
A mystery novel differs from a narrative because usually mysteries have suspense in them and keep the reader dumbfounded after every chapter. Mysteries always want the reader to keep reading, as do narratives. Narratives are books that tell a story from the narrator's perspective. Usually narratives tell a story about something during this time period that some kids can relate to.
The title might be a clue to the story because, so far in chapter one, they have introduced ten different characters. I think it is very interesting because the title is "And Then There Were None". I think that will mean that at the end of their little vacation at Indian Island, they will not return so then there will be none.
